Rooted Tallow

$24.00

Rooted is an earthy, grounding tallow balm. It starts with grass-fed tallow, rendered by us at our shop, which is then mixed with organic cold-pressed jojoba oil and beeswax.

We add a mix of freshly powdered resins, Frankincense and Myrrh, and begin a long and slow extraction method that has taken a year to perfect. It’s such a potent method that the balm goes from a white tallow color to a gorgeous light brown shade.

The smell is grounding. both the frankincense and myrrh resins come through beautifully. The texture is what I’d describe as a “butter” texture. It’s creamy and easy to spread, and locks in moisture!

Frankincense and myrrh both come from trees. Resins are like a bandage for the tree. When a tree has a wound or has a branch break off, liquid resins from the resin ducts come to the surface and harden, forming a sticky bandage. Resins have been used for centuries and are mentioned in ancient texts and manuscripts (including the Bible.)

Myrrh was commonly used during burial preparations, in perfume making, and for making medicine. It has antiseptic, carminative, and analgesic properties. Myrrh is the most ancient gum resin known to man, and the first scented plant mentioned in the Bible (when it was called “bdellium.”) The name ‘myrrh’ comes from the Arabic word ‘murr’ which means bitter.

Frankincense is a gum resin that has a rich history. It was a valuable incense and had nearly 5 times the demand that myrrh had. The scent is almost lemony, with lighter top notes. It was commonly used in temples as it was believed to heighten awareness and elevate thoughts. It was also once decreed by the Jews that only frankincense could be used for holy incense. It has rich medicinal benefits and has been used both internally and externally.

These resins are special to me and were chosen for this blend. I named the blend after a passage of scripture that meant a great deal to me, Isaiah 61. Deeply rooted. Unmoving. Unwavering. Grounded. Sure-footed.

I use this balm on cuts and scrapes, on my face as a night moisturizer, and anytime I need a moment to stop and breathe.

  • As a little girl, I was fascinated with nature.

If you could peek into my past, you'd find a barefoot girl more comfortable when muddy, making mud villages, building treehouses, digging forts in the field, and crushing up flower petals to make perfume. I desired to be a nurse, or a doctor, when I grew up. My heart was always to help, to see a need, and to attempt to meet it. Keep reading here.
