This is a collaboration with my friend Nicole from Dancing Fern Folk Apothecary. I asked her if she could formulate a seasonal bitters blend with herbs that resonated with her. I offered a suggestion (added dual-extracted reish!) and then processed the bitters in our shop! She came up with this beautiful blend of herbs and spices to support the body’s digestive tract.

Our American diet is severely lacking in bitter foods that are more common in other cultures! Bitters help signal to the liver to start preparing to digest food. Rooted is an earthy, grounding tallow balm. It starts with grass-fed tallow, rendered by us at our shop, which is then mixed with organic cold-pressed jojoba oil and beeswax. We add a blend of Frankincense and Myrrh resins, and begin a long and slow extraction method that has taken years to perfect. It’s such a potent extraction method that the balm goes from a white tallow color to a gorgeous light brown shade.

The smell is grounding and slightly perfumey. Both the frankincense and myrrh resins come through beautifully. The texture is what I’d describe as a “butter” texture. It’s creamy and easy to spread, and locks in moisture!

Frankincense and myrrh resin both come from trees. Resins are like a bandage for the tree. When a tree has a wound or a branch breaks off, liquid resins from the resin ducts come to the surface and harden, forming a sticky bandage. In this hair oil, whole peppermint is utilized which yields a more potent, balanced version of the plant.

Peri rinse – Steep 1-2 tablespoons of herbs in 8 ounces of hot or boiling water. Cover as it steeps to prevent the medicinal steam from escaping. When cooled down to a skin-safe temperature, strain and add to a peri rinse bottle, either straight or diluted with half water, half herbal infusion. Refrigerate any leftover herbal infusion for up to 7 days. Compost any remaining herbs after steeping.

Sitz bath – Steep 1/2 to 1 cup of herbs in 1 quart of boiling water. Allow to steep for 10-20 minutes, covered to prevent the medicinal steam from escaping. After steeping, strain and add to a sitz bath and soak for 10-20 minutes. Compost any remaining herbs after steeping.

Herbal bath – Add 1-2 cups of herbs to a cloth bag or a metal sieve. If using a cloth bag, add the bag directly to a warm or hot bath and allow it to steep for the entirety of the bath. If using a metal sieve, allow the hot bath water to run over the herbs as the tub fills up. Alternatively, steep herbs separately in a jar or bowl with 1 quart boiling water, then strain and add the infusion to the bath. Compost any remaining herbs after steeping.

Magnesium is a crucial mineral that supports over 300 reactions in the body. Magnesium chloride comes from the brine of the Dead Sea water. DIRECTIONS — Add 1- 2 cups of flakes, or up to one bag, to a very warm or hot bath or foot soak. Soak for 20 minutes to receive the benefits that the magnesium offers. If itching occurs, try lowering the amount of salt used in the bath, as that is often a sign of magnesium deficiency, and it requires magnesium to be increased slowly.

A simple yet effective powdered detergent using tallow as the main ingredient. 

This was tested on cloth diapers and passed the swish test each time!

To use, add 1 scoop (1 tablespoon) to your laundry load. Some machines have the option of removing the tray for liquid detergent, so the detergent better mixes with the water. For heavy-duty loads or extra stinky loads, you can use 2 scoops of detergent.

INGREDIENTS: Saponified tallow, sodium carbonate (washing soda), sodium percarbonate

Sodium percarbonate is the only ingredient in this boost powder! It becomes washing soda and hydrogen peroxide (32.5% peroxide) when introduced to water.

When activated by water, it can be used to gently lift stains from a wide variety of items or to deodorize. It is a popular ingredient in many products that are meant for whitening and brightening, but I wanted to offer it as a single ingredient rather than mixed with other toxic filler ingredients.

To use, sprinkle a little of the boost on a stain and spritz with water, or you can make a paste and scrub it into the item. Allow it to sit for 20 minutes or up to 12 hours before washing as normal. I recommend doing a spot test first when using it on colored clothes to be sure it does not fade the fabric. 

As a laundry boost, you can add 1 to 2 tablespoons to your load of laundry. 

To strip thrifted clothes or clothes with a funky smell, fill a bathtub with HOT water to cover the clothes, then mix in 1/4c - 1/2c boost. Mix and allow to sit for up to 6 hours, then drain and wash as normal. You can add 1/4c laundry detergent to further help the stripping process.

For pots and pans, add 1 to 2 tablespoons to the pan, then add enough water to cover the granules (1 to 2 cups) and let it sit for 20 minutes or up to 12 hours. Scrub if needed, then rinse clean!  

You can also make a spray out of this to treat stains or funky smells. Mix 2 teaspoons of the granules with 16 ounces of water. This spray will be useful for around 5 hours before the active ingredients are no longer useful.

ABOUT — Pure pine tar is made from boiling down the sap from pine trees, yielding a very sticky syrup. (It is NOT coal tar!) It has been used traditionally in woodworking to help protect wood, and medicinally—externally— for skin. Pine tar contains constituents from the pine resin. Resins are the lifeblood of the tree, and they “bleed” when the tree is injured, as a way to protect and heal the wood. Those same properties apply when used on the skin! Each cherry measures approximately 3/4” with a 2” stem that is the wick. Each set of 6 cherries comes in a cotton cloth drawstring bag.

100% natural wool sponges! They are effective and naturally resist odors and mildew.

To use, rinse the sponge with water the first time. If using solid dish soap, rub the sponge across the soap to build up a lather, then wash dishes as normal. If using liquid dish soap, apply some to the sponge and wash as usual. After using them each time, rinse them and squeeze to get rid of excess moisture. Hang to dry or lay flat on the counter.

Over time, these will shrink into a slightly smaller square and will “felt” even more, or develop a tighter weave. That is normal!
